🇯🇲 Instructor Program in Bull Bay: Passing the Torch of Skateboarding Knowledge
From the streets of Bordeaux to the shores of Bull Bay, the spirit of skateboarding knows no borders. This month, Jamaica Skate Culture is proud to host a Skateboard Instructor Training Program led by none other than Benjamin Garcia—World Champion WCS 2017 and European Champion 2018. Benjamin is also the director of the Skateboard School of Bordeaux, one of the most respected training institutions in France.
This isn’t Benjamin’s first time on the island. Long before the Freedom Skatepark was even built, he was already rolling through Jamaica, skating at the iconic Gully with local legends like Shama, Ivah, and a very young Daniel. His return is always met with excitement and respect, and this time, he’s bringing something deeper: knowledge-sharing and empowerment.
🎓 A New Generation of Certified Instructors
The program, which runs in Bull Bay until April 21st, will culminate with a practical exam on April 26th. Eleven passionate skaters are taking part in this first training wave—including four women, a 16-year-old teenager, and even a 13-year-old prodigy who has shown exceptional talent and dedication throughout the course.
These interns are not just learning how to teach skateboarding; they’re becoming leaders in their communities.
🇫🇷 A French-Jamaican Exchange of Expertise
Backed by over 20 years of experience from the Fédération Française de Roller et Skateboard (FFRS), this initiative is a powerful example of international collaboration. The French Federation has developed an official diploma system for skateboarding instructors, and they’re now sharing this model with Jamaican youth—building a bridge for future certifications and club creation across the island.
🏅 Next Stop: Boston Bay & Kingston Bull Bay
Following this successful session in Bull Bay, a second instructor training will roll out in May, with new workshops planned for Boston Bay and Kingston. These programs are more than just training—they are seeds being planted to grow a strong, local skateboarding culture rooted in structure, inclusion, and love for the sport.
🏛️ A Celebration of Growth
To recognize this important milestone, a certificate ceremony will be held at the Embassy of France in Jamaica, celebrating the commitment and passion of our first cohort of trained instructors.
This program is financed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the strong support of the French Embassy and the ever-supportive Ambassador Olivier Guyonvarch, a passionate advocate of urban sports. He firmly believes in their power as a tool for crime prevention, a way to bring balance and awareness to street-involved youth, and a powerful educational weapon against the poverty of the spirit.
Stay tuned for updates, and big respect to everyone involved. Skateboarding in Jamaica is not just about tricks—it’s about community, culture, and building a brighter future one push at a time. 🛹💛💚
